Winter Park was created as a planned community for wealthy northerners to escape the cold of winter and spend their summers. The 600 acres was bought in 1881 by two entrepreneurs and the work began. The first official building to be placed among the houses, businesses, and parks was the train depot. The train around the bend was convenient and enabled the process of the building of the town to be quickened.
Historical Landmark Events
In 1885 the Rollins College was built and in 2011 was named one of the 50 Most Amazing College Campuses by The Best Colleges. The 80 acre campus offers a beautiful setting with Spanish-Mediterranean architecture, rambling roses, and the Walk of Fame. There are over 200 stones collected from the birthplaces of historical figures that complete the Walk of Fame.
The Casa Feliz, which means Happy House in Spanish, was built in 1932 by James Gamble Rogers II. The architecture of this farmhouse influenced the style and culture of the community. Barbour, the man who hired Rogers to build, gave him the freedom to create the building however he fashioned, which at this time, such frivolous freedom was unheard of. Barbour loved the finished house and so did the community of Winter Park. Casa Feliz was restored in 2000 with funds from private donations. It now serves the community as a historic home museum and a rental for weddings and private parties.
